We visit the northern part of Manhattan, to learn about the history, the cultural heritage and the soul of Harlem, the legendary district known worldwide as the black Mecca of the world. This explosion of cultural pride, referred to as the “Harlem Renaissance” has its roots in the late 1800s, when a considerable number of African Americans
– freed from centuries of slavery – migrate from the rural south to the urban north of the United States. We pass the huge St John the Divine Cathedral, the prestigious Columbia University where Barack Obama studied, the Apollo Theater which baptized sacred music monsters such as Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklyn and at the end we will attend a Baptist Mass with the traditional Gospel Choir, clapping hands with the joyful sounds of Gospel songs, reliving the original spiritual environment of the Gospel Mass, a tradition matured from the times of slavery, when blacks were unable to read and it was not theirs allowed to participate in the cult of whites. The current Mass traces the history of the religious approach of the slaves through the liveliness of the choirs and the movements of the ceremony.
